August: A Resilient Mindset

Hello lovelies!

Happy August!

For those in the Northern Hemisphere, you may be gearing up for the back-to-school season this month and enjoying those wonderful summer weeks before the new school year.

Though I don’t wish to rush away summer, I would like to provide your family with some tools to help with any back-to-school jitters. For families in the Southern Hemisphere- this will be helpful for you too!

If trepidation IS in the air, please know that this is normal and okay. Let’s look at some tools to help ease the process.

Teaching children the difference between a Growth and a Fixed Mindset is a beautiful start to showing children that our minds are powerful and that a few phrases can help  them adjust their mindset and persevere through challenges.

How to use this information:

In practice, this might look like working on a project together, such as building something out of LEGO.

If frustration arises because the project isn’t turning out as envisioned, you can model a growth mindset by saying, “Let’s take a break and try again later.” When you come back, you might try using a different piece or approaching the challenge with a new strategy.

Maybe your child is having trouble tying their shoes and says, “I can’t do it!” Gently remind them to slow their breathing and let them know that they’re still learning. Encourage them to say, “I can’t tie my shoes—yet,” and maybe add, “but I’ll learn.”

If their frustration level is low, you can ask them to say the word “yet” with some positivity, and check in by asking if they feel a little bit better.

Believing that your mind can expand and develop not only leads to greater academic success but builds self-esteem, self-worth, and resilience.

Encouraging children to take risks, try new things, and embrace challenges sends a powerful message:  “ I don’t have to be perfect. I am not stuck. I am brave enough to grow. I was born to learn.”
