April Glimmers

Hello and happy April! This month I wanted to focus on 'glimmers' I know that this term (by Deb Dana) is becoming more and more popular, but you've likely been practicing 'glimmer hunting' for longer than the term has been around (2018)! If you're someone who enjoys looking for beauty in the world,

you're someone looking to practice gratitude,

or even someone trying to find acceptance or neutrality instead of pain,

you may already be noticing glimmers. Glimmers are typically described as small, or brief cues of safety, joy, or contentment that our body picks up without us even thinking about it. This can be the felt sense of safety when we see a loved one smiling with soft facial expressions,

the feeling of joy when you see a green leaf in the spring, or a cute animal,

or even a moment when the pain of your stubbed toe disappears. Though our body notices our surroundings without intention, it's incredibly helpful to consciously put in the time and energy to notice these moments of joy, safety, and/or neutrality to help build our self-regulation skills. How I've used Glimmers A few years ago, I "invented" a fun game where I'd go out for a walk. Then I'd stand still and with my eyes closed, imagine a black and white world. After about a minute, I'd open my eyes and pretend I was seeing colour for the first time -it brought me so much joy! But I have also used glimmer hunting techniques in moments of unease. I've sat with nerves in doctors offices and looked around for something that could make me feel a little bit more at ease. I remember noticing a wooden coat rack and I felt calmer from the warm tones and the fact that it had been a part of nature. It was a small shift in my body but I still noticed that I felt a little bit calmer. I've also struggled with fibroid pain and when this happens, I've sometimes been able to notice a part of my body that feels neutral - such as my hands, to help me focus less on the pain for a moment and realize I'm safe. To help make glimmers an intentional part of your day, I've created two posters to download. I hope these suggestions help you notice glimmers in your life and add a bit more joy, or a clearer sense of safety to your every day life.
